PCIe 7.0 Standard with Increased Bandwidth Announced; Set to Launch in 2025: The next-generation PCI Express 7.0 was introduced by PCI-SIG at the 2022 PCI-SIG Developers Conference. The new standard will include a higher data rate of 128 GT/s (Gigatransfers per second). This occurs when more PCs still need to support the two-generation-old PCIe 5.0. Here is the pertinent information.

Detailed PCIe 7.0

Faster than the PCIe 5.0 standard, the PCI Express 7 standard offers up to 512 GB/s bi-directionally through an x16 configuration. It is designed to provide quick performance and increased power economy. And it is based on PAM4 (Pulse Amplitude Modulation with 4 Levels).

Additionally, it is said to retain high dependability and minimal latency. Further, the PCIe 7 standard will support all earlier iterations of PCIe technology.

“With the upcoming PCIe 7.0 definition, PCI-SIG maintains its 30-year commitment to creating industry-leading specifications that push the frontiers of innovation,” stated Al Yanes, president and chairman of PCI-SIG.

Our workgroups will focus on increasing power efficiency and channel characteristics as PCIe technology develops to meet the increased bandwidth needs.

Compared to the PCIe 5 standard or even the PCIe 6 standard, announced earlier this year. And it is anticipated to be available by the end of this year, the PCIe 7 doubles its speeds in all the x1, x2, x4, x8, and x16 lanes. Recall that the PCIe 5 standard was released in 2019.

It has been established that the new PCIe 7 standard will debut in 2025 and will begin delivering by 2027. There are still some unanswered questions. Given that the PCIe 5 is currently in short supply and the PCIe 6 is still under development. It is unclear when this will begin to occur. So it’s advisable to hold off until further information becomes available.
